Landscape quote checker

Got a quote for topsoil, mulch, gravel or road base? See what depth it actually covers, whether it’s more than you need, and the real price per yard and per ton.

Enter your area, the depth you want, and up to three quotes. The checker shows the depth each quote would actually cover, whether it’s more (or less) than you need, and the price per unit, so quotes in yards, tons and bags can be compared fairly.

Yards and tons converter

Soil and mulch are usually sold by the cubic yard; stone, gravel and sand by the ton. This converts between them, and shows what an amount will cover.

Why quotes are hard to compare

  • Yards vs tons. A cubic yard of mulch weighs a few hundred pounds; a cubic yard of gravel weighs well over a ton. A price per ton and a price per yard can’t be compared unless you know what the material weighs. The checker converts using typical weights; ask the supplier for theirs.
  • Delivery. A delivery fee spread over a small load makes the price per unit look high. Compare quotes for the same quantity.
  • Extra for settling. Loose material settles after spreading, so a fair quote includes a little more than the measured volume, usually 5–25% depending on the material. A quote for double what you need is not “a little extra”.
  • Bags. Bag sizes vary (1, 1.5, 2 or 3 cubic feet). Check the bag size before comparing bag prices.

Use the materials calculator to work out exactly how much you need for an odd-shaped area.
